How is church tax handled, and what happens if I leave the church?

Church tax status is checked once a year in October directly with the German tax authorities. The information received is valid from January 1st of the following year. This means: if you leave the church during the current year, this change will only be reflected from January of the next year. Any corrections for the current year can be made in your annual tax return.
